Back To Jerusalem: Church Planting Movements In The Holy Land
Published in Paperback by WinePress Publishing (August, 2000)
Average review score:

Excellent!!Excellent book from a seasoned veteran. I know Dr. Ray personally and can atest that for anyone interested in Israel-Palestine and God's work among both Jews and Arabs this book is a great resource. The strongest aspects of the book for me are the various insights offered into the cultural personalities of Palestinians and Israelis. This type of information is only gained by living among the people. Furthermore, these insights are essential for anyone desiring to impact Israelies and Palestinians with the gospel. The Holy Land is an intense place to live and work. Anyone who is interested in praying strategically or coming to the Land needs to understand this and Dr. Ray has done a masterful job in describing and discussing the issues. May God use it for His Glory!

The Battle of Britain: New Perspectives
Published in Paperback by Orion Publishing Co (07 March, 1996)
Average review score:

A view of the battle from the inside looking outJohn Ray's book is in keeping with the excitement and suspense of other accounts of this fascinating battle (the only one in history to be fought completely in the air), but he takes the point of view of Britain's Sir Hugh Dowding, Commander-in-chief of RAF Fighter Command. Ray tells of the inner workings of the RAF, the political battles and clashes of personality that were happening as the battle was being fought and eventually won. It isn't a hagiography of Dowding, but defends his positions and points out his weaknesses. The details on the battle are given as they relate to Dowding's story, without a rigid historical chronology, but containing some terrific anecdotes (such as Dowding's visit to the French Armie de L'Aire headquarters in March of 1940, which helped him make up his mind not to send any more of his fighters to be destroyed in what was obviously a lost cause.
This is a book for those who already know the Battle of Britain and wish to delve deeper into the personalities involed, rather than a complete record of events during the Summer of 1940. It is an intellectual and entertaining look at the Battle from behind the desk of its most tenacious leader.

Behind the Blue and Gray: The Soldier's Life in the Civil War
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Average review score:

It's not a book...it's a journeyAfter reading several adult books on the Civil War for research, I began this book by Delia Ray (I like to read children's books as well). I simply need to say that this book is excellent. Civil War reading can be very dry, but not this book. Delia Ray takes us on a soldiers journey beginning with enlistment and ending with a soldiers life after the war, using quotes from actual letters and diaries strategically placed throughout the book. She covers such interesting items as what soldiers ate, how they drilled, their various living quarters, what they did for enjoyment, their attitudes toward their commanders, soldiers of other nationalities, and the enemy. She discusses individual battles, medical treatment, hospital and prison life, with such empathy that when you finish this book you will actually feel as if you were there yourself. The photographs in this book each tell a story in themselves, as well. They are some of the most moving photos I've seen of the Civil War. I simply couldn't put this book down onced I picked it up. I highly recommend this book to both children and adults because like my title says, it's not a book... it's a journey. An all inclusive journey that seems to leave no question concerning the Civil War soldiers life unanswered.
